It Happens Quietly - Jacqui Dankworth

On her new album, Dame Cleo's daughter, Jacqui presents a selection of lush, atmospheric orchestral arrangements in collaboration with (and lovingly dedicated to) her father, the late Sir John Dankworth. In addition to standards such as A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square and Blame It On My Youth, the album contains some wonderful original material in the form of the hauntingly beautiful title track (music by John Dankworth, lyrics by Buddy Kaye), and The Man, a father and daughter co-write.

"...one of our finest singers, regardless of category,"   Clive Davis, The Sunday Times

"Jacqui Dankworth and her father, John, had been planning an album together for years, but only managed to finish it close to the end of the latter's life, and this is it. Even if his name wasn't on the cover, there could be no doubt about whose arrangements these were. His style is inimitable, particularly his vocal accompaniments – always appropriate but never bland. One of the 12 songs is co-written by father and daughter, another composed by John, and the rest are classic ballads, of which Jacqui is the perfect exponent. A seriously good album in the classic mould, beautifully sung and written and superbly played."    Dave Gelly, Observer

and a note from Jacqui ....

Dear friends and family,
I'm writing to tell you how much I appreciate your support and enthusiasm for It Happens Quietly. The album debuted at nymber 6 in the UK charts and has been in the top 40 for over a week. This record was a labor of love for me and John and for all the brilliant, hard-working folks who contributed to it, so I'm absolutely over the moon about how well it's being received. If you haven't heard it yet, you can take a listen at:

Also, I'll be performing the material from this CD live at Ronnie Scott's on Wednesday, September 14. I'm happy to say it's nearly sold out, but a few tickets are available here:

My heartfelt thanks to you for making It Happens Quietly such a success. I know my lovely dad would have been proud of me and very happy to know that his work and the work of so many other gifted musicians is getting such a warm reception.
Many thanks.

Jacqui x

Reviews of Dame Cleo at the Gateshead international Jazz Festival:

Cleo Laine (vcl); Jacqui Dankworth (vcl); Andy Panayi (sax.clt); Mark Nightingale (tmb); John Horler (pno); Alec Dankworth (bs); Jim Hart (dms); Malcolm Edmonston (pno for Ms Dankworth)

Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale her infinite variety... The line from Antony and Cleopatra was never more applicable than tonight when applied to a modern day Cleopatra - Cleo Laine.

83 years young it was perhaps appropriate that the First Lady of British Jazz should kick off with a number from her legendary album - Shakespeare and All That Jazz - If Music Be The Food of Love. It certainly was the food of love tonight. The Grand Dame was in good voice as she ran through a selection of standards that told us that the years have a long way to go to catch up with the voice. And when those years do catch up the family have nothing to worry about because daughter Jacqui is already carrying the baton - should mama ever falter - and they'll always have a good rhythm section with son Alec Dankworth around.

With Mark Nightingale on trombone, Andy Panayi on reeds, John Horler on piano and Jim Hart drums it was a tight knit ensemble that provided the perfect support.

Too many highlights to name but Mother and daughter duetting on I Thought About You, Cleo, looking resplendent in a gold lamé top over a red gown, paying tribute to Ellington with Just A Sittin' and a Rockin' - one of several songs by Duke - and Jacqui's Almost Like Being In Love were high on the list of goodies as was Alec's bass feature Jack The Bear.

It was a night that saw sceptics converted as they joined in the standing ovation awarded to Cleo at the end.

Lance.

Freedom of the Borough for Dame Cleo Laine

A PACKED public gallery is guaranteed next week when the legendary Dame Cleo Laine is honoured with the Freedom of the Borough of Milton Keynes.

Dame Cleo, whose career spans more than half a century, will be presented with the accolade by MK Mayor, Councillor Debbie Brock, in a special celebration in the Council Chamber next Thursday (March 31st), starting at 8pm. Only two other prominent local citizens, Lord Campbell and Dr Jim Marshall OBE have been given the Freedom of our borough. The accolade is in recognition of Dame Cleo’s international reputation in music, her support of local music charities and her work in promoting music education.
Cllr Brock said:
“It’s not an exaggeration to say that Dame Cleo Laine is a legend in her own lifetime."

“Both Dame Cleo and her late husband Sir John Dankworth have done so much for Milton Keynes over the years and made an enormous impact musically and culturally for the borough."

“Wavendon's Stables Theatre, a registered charity founded by Cleo and John, is a fantasticvenue which regularly features top class acts, and is immensely respected and popular both nationally and internationally. "
Dame Cleo said: "This is a great honour and I'm looking forward to the day."
